How do you effect change?

July 18, 2007

I was just researching what has been happening in my state in terms of educational technology professional development, and stumbled across a recent blog post from Will Richardson, titled Why is it so Hard for Educators to Focus on Their Own Learning? Will makes a great point that at times teachers need to allow themselves to be the learner, and actually gain the understanding of a certain technology or integration tool for themselves as consumers of that technology.

As a Technology and Instruction Specialist at the district level, my hope is that, while we are planning training and moving in the district forward towards common goals, we are still focused on a digitally literate foundation. As long as we continue to work towards that literacy, and it does start with the teachers as consumers and users of the technology, then we can continue to grow as a district.

As I plan and coordinate professional development efforts, this post will help my focus on the classroom teacher, who is the most important individual in the educational lives of children. If I can empower them, or help them to gain efficacy in their own skills, then that will impact the students in the classroom and ultimate student achievement.
